Disney Pixar: Fashion Inspiration?
By: Alex Van Pelt
The Disney has been inspiring artists for generations, and designers are no exception! Fans of the franchise, particularly the Disney Princess franchise, have been working and re-working the original character designs and adding a bit of their own flair.
Check out these quick fashion sketches inspired by some famous Disney heroines:

That’s Belle, Jasmine, Snow White, Pocahontas, and Mulan, from left to right. Creativity, style, and my favorite childhood memories? Yes, please!
So it’s no surprise that days after Disney Pixar’s Brave debuted in theaters that fashion articles started cropping up about the film and some of its style motifs. The heroine of the film, Merida, is a feisty redhead with a knack for archery and taming massive curls. She’s a Scottish Princess, so plaid is a main pattern in the costume designs, particularly in the kilts.
This proud and bold pattern is easy to wear in a chic modern look- just be sure to pair a plaid with monotone accessories in different textures. To look more daring and rugged, a good combat boot and
satchel makes any outfit adventurous!

Merida also wears a few iconic dresses in the film, one of which being a gold and eggshell blue satin gown. Designers and stylists have taken this:

… And turned it into this fun and flirty look!

This sweet sundress picks up the original blue and detailing with some ruffles, while the bold gold cuff and pointed arrow earrings add some sassy tomboy flair. But, if you’re feeling particularly daring…

This ensemble is very trendy! The different textures of blue in the skirt are accented by the different textures in the accessories. The woven bracelet, metal arrowhead ring and the suede wedges help turn this sky-colored frock into an edgy daytime look.
Brave, which came into theaters June 22, is a beautifully animated movie with a beautiful message to mothers and daughters. It’s inspired these fashionistas, so go check it out before it’s too late!
