Summer from the sixties

The summer runways are welcoming the sixties in a way that they are taking classic styles and silhouettes and incorporating them into trendy summer fashion! Big designers have been making the bold move and bringing a blast from the past trend in their shows! The trend blossomed in the spring and has evolved into summer fashion, becoming something that you should consider as your newest wardrobe addition! Fashion is ever changing but full circle at the same time, as we have seen trends recycled every generation. This is no exception! Playful patterns and sexy silhouettes are dominating summer fashion!

Black and white and read all over!

Everyone’s first thought for Autumn fashion is color, but this year if you look in any high fashion window, you’ll find that black and white is the color scheme to be lusted over. As you may know this is not a new trend, but one that was so loved it couldn’t help but be carried over to the next season.
I’ve recently been lucky enough to travel to some of the largest fashion capitals of the world; Paris, Venice and Rome. All major designers represented, such as Prada, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Celine, etc. proved that -from hand bags to blouses- black and white will make an obvious appearance this fall.

Keep the versatile black and white interesting this fall! To rock the look and stay fashion forward, try adding a pop of color or a patterned piece to a monochromatic outfit.

Double slit style

Maxi skirts are no doubt a wardrobe staple, ideal for a casual summer day or dressed up for a night out. But for this summer, take a risk with the maxi style by trying out the newest trend for skirts and dresses: slits. And when it comes to maxi slits, two are better than one. The double slit maxi skirt features two long leg slits both in front of the skirt. The slits create flowy movement, show off legs, and offer an unexpected twist on a basic silhouette. VS Angel Alessandra Ambrosia shows just how effortlessly a double slit skirt works for daytime, while Lauren Conrad and Taylor Swift prove the style can be converted into a nighttime look.

image

Emily Current and Merrin Elliot, star stylists, Current/Elliot designers, and Who What Wear contributors, have expert advice on how to style this unique skirt. They suggest letting the skirt (and your legs) the center of attention by pairing the double slit design with a basic top, such as a t-shirt or a button up. Next, add a statement shoe to the look. The two slits in the front of the skirt are ideal for showcasing jeweled and studded flat sandals, or a pair of wood bottom wedges. Each of the options below would pair perfectly with a simple white t-shirt or button down.

Skating Team

The skater skirt is aptly named after the flowy skirts figure skaters typically wear as they twirl and glide across the ice. Luckily, skater skirts are more than acceptable to wear this season for those of us who are not on the synchronized skating team. Get used to this style, because skater skirts are the skirt of the season.

image

Skater skirts are fitted at the high waistline and flare out into a full circle skirt. The flared a-line silouhette is flattering on just about all body types and, bonus, it creates the illusion of a cinched waist while slimming legs. Olivia Palermo, Lauren Conrad, and Kristin Cavallari are just a few fashionable celebrities who have recentely been spotted in the skater skirt. They prove the versatility of the garmet, each styling and wearing their skater skirts differntly. Try a t-shirt or chambray blouse with sandals for a casual summer afternoon. Or add a tank and wedges for a night out. Go ahead and get a variety of different skate skirts, in all different colors, patterns, and fabrics (leather is really trendy right now). Check out Lulus and Tobi for a ton of fashionable and affordable options.

keep it busy

Runway fashion has proven that summer 2013 will be a busy one, and we don’t mean your balance between sipping umbrella drinks by the pool and making summer cash! The runways were filled with bold and exotic patterns that got everyone thinking, busier is better. We’ve sorted through to find our three favorites!

1. No matter the width, length, or color, stripesare a necessity in your summertime style.

image

Dolce & Gabbana, Balmain, and Marc Jacobs

2. Exotic patterns, giving a western edge on eastern traditional wear, Asian inspired patterns are a must have in your closet.

image

Etro, Emilio Pucci, and Prada

3. Whether you are taking a vacation in the tropical islands, or stranded in Oxford, OH, hawaiian prints are no longer cliche tourists’ wear, but now the main attraction.

image

Proenza Schouler, Isabel Marant, and Kenzo

Remember, this summer, whether you are picking out your vacation wear, something breezy for the beach, or stylish looks to keep cool at the lake, try to bring your A game and go for a bolder and busier look.

Itch for Hitch this Fall!

If the pre-seasonal shows foreshadow the season’s top trends, we should definitely prepare for a mid-century look. The style is inspired by the beauties that starred in films by the infamous, Alfred Hitchcock.

Cashmere, furs, nipped-waistlines, and pencil-skirts embody this Hitchcock vibe. Among other designers, Prada, Celine, and Michael Kors took cues from the sophisticated yet sexy look for their pre-fall 2013 collections.

To get the look this fall, try wearing t-strap heels, tailored pieces, or sporting a belt to accentuate a cinched waistline! If you’re feeling daring with the film star style, show off fur accents paired with cat-eyed shades!

Designer collaborations have—thankfully for us—become a norm in fashion these days. This spring offers some of the most coveted designers with beautiful collections at amazingly affordable prices. Below are just a few of the fabulous high-end/low-price partnerships for the coming months.

Derek Lam for Kohl’s DesigNation

Last year, Kohl’s kicked off their DesigNation collaboration program with Narcisco Rodriguez. This year, Derek Lam is following in his successful footsteps. Every partnership with DesingNation takes the inspiration of one city, and Lam’s collection reflects the colorful whimsy of Rio de Janeiro. The full line of dresses, skirts, jackets, and even swimwear will be available at Kohl’s stores nationwide on April 5th with prices ranging from only $36.00-$88.00

Kate Young for Target

Target is a pro at seasonal collaborations, but this season they’re taking a risk with something new. Rather than teaming up with a designer, they have joined forces with Hollywood stylist, Kate Young. With a client list that includes Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams, Young has been named the fashion industry’s most powerful stylist. The collection is full of sleek silhouettes and dainty prints at low prices of $29.99-$89.99. Find accessories from only $14.99-$49.99 as well! Kate Young for Target launches April 14th.

Tank Top Takeover

image

A trend that will definitely be seen this spring and summer is the tank top.

Tanks are easy to pair with jeans or shorts, and effortlessly matchable with the rest of your warm weather wardrobe. They are perfect for a casual night out or a weekend afternoon with friends.

image

image

With so many styles, colors and stores to choose from, it’s hard to not get involved with the tank top takeover.

Spring weather can be unpredictable, so if it gets too breezy, simply throw a cardigan, pull-over, or hoodie over your tank. You’ll be set for any spring weather.

They can be found basically anywhere, but some great places to find a wide range of tank tops are Pac-sun and Urban Outfitters

Cheers to the Weekend

Fashionistas everywhere rejoiced when Kate Spade launched her spinoff brand, Saturday, earlier this month. The only store is in Tokyo, Japan, but her U.S. based online store is open to all 50 states.

This sister brand is a less-expensive alternative to the Kate Spade label. Don’t think that a cheaper price means skimping on style. The Saturday line reflects the casual, carefree attitude of the weekend in wearable pieces for any day of the week.

The Saturday line is versatile, functional, and full of graphic patterns, bright colors, and bold accessories.

Saturday is perfect for any college girl on a budget.

Fall Takes on a Delicate Edge

As we all take the highly anticipated plunge into our spring wardrobes, it’s the perfect time to embark on our pre-fall fashion forecasts! After combing through countless runway shows, we’ve established a glorious batch of trend takeaways that are sure to step on the gas to your fall fashion-fever.

One that was re-vamped and spun into pre-fall shows is lace. As you all have formerly known it as the ultimate feminine style, the use of lace will be a little less girly and a little more sinister come fall. Traditional sheer lace was modernized as it was used in a more severe setting on runways. Labels like Valentino, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, Michael Kors, and Diane Von Furstenberg integrated confectionery lace into their designs for the season.

Try combining this delicate fabric with edgier pieces for a completely seductive look this fall!

Watching Blake Lively behind the scenes for her new Gucci Premiere campaign has us falling in love with our favorite Gossip Girl blonde all over again. The campaign was featured in this month’s ELLE (which you can’t miss because Miss. Minaj rocks the cover).

What caught our attention were the floor length Gucci gowns with open backs and dramatic leg slits, and Lively’s side swept old-Hollywood inspired hair.

Formal season is coming up for many, and we think all you ladies should take a cue from Lively and play with bright red lips, waved hair, and floor length dresses for an effortlessly glamorous look.

The Pinafore Comeback

image
A pinafore, more commonly known as a jumper over here in America, is a sleeveless dress with adjustable straps, meant to be worn over a blouse. The pinafore was originally worn for practical purposes, much like an apron. This spring designers have reinvented the pinafore for girls of the 21st century. Unexpected fabrics, such as leather and denim, along with glamorous details, like crystal embellishments and floral patterns, have updated the pinafore to one of this season’s must haves. Feel free to wear the updated pinafore dress by itself- the new versions no longer require a blouse or undershirt. When it finally gets warm, try this new shape as a trendy alternative to the sundress.

Even though Emma Watson has strongly denied through Twitter that she will not that be staring in the 2014 Fifty Shades of Grey film, it doesn’t mean that she won’t be making a stir by moving away from her innocent Harry Potter background by staring in this summer’s upcoming film, The Bling Ring.

Set to debut on June 14, this upcoming tale features Watson alongside a number of other young actors in telling the story of how a group of teenagers set out to rob Hollywood.

Based on true events from 2008, this movie tells the story of a group of teenagers who known as “The Bling Ring.” When most of us enjoyed summer vacations doing only some slightly illegal activity, these teens took it to a new level by robbing celebrities blind.

Even though the group was eventually caught, it wasn’t until after they stole about $3 million in cash, jewelry and clothes, most belonging to Paris Hilton.

This new movie looks to be a great summer hit combining action, fashion and celebrities while using a strong mix of established names such as Watson and upcoming actors new to the industry. And rumor is Paris Hilton will actually be doing some work again by staring as herself.
