Let’s get lacey

It’s summertime now which means we’re seeing a lot more clothing with an “airy” look.  Lace has become a hot commodity not only for A-listers, but for everyday street style as well.  We’re not talking scandalous lace, but rather more sophisticated looks with lace accents.

With jean shorts being hot right now, some are taking on DIY projects of lace additions to the bottoms of jean shorts.  Check out this  ”pin-teresting” look :

Focusing now on tops, lace tank tops are a great piece to wear with a pair of cute shorts during the day or with a great pair of white jeans for a night out.  These types of tops usually come in solid colors, which makes them easier to pair with shorts or pants.  Here’s a few examples:

Lace shorts are another item that is sweeping stores.  These too usually come in solid colors, making them more versatile to pair with tops, shoes, accessories, etc. Here are celebrities Selena Gomez, Kristin Cavallari, Emma Watson, and Blake Lively showing off their lace shorts:

Due to it’s increasing popularity, lace pieces are becoming easier to find. When you’re looking for a statement piece for a new outfit, lace may be the way to go!

Skating Team

The skater skirt is aptly named after the flowy skirts figure skaters typically wear as they twirl and glide across the ice. Luckily, skater skirts are more than acceptable to wear this season for those of us who are not on the synchronized skating team. Get used to this style, because skater skirts are the skirt of the season.

image

Skater skirts are fitted at the high waistline and flare out into a full circle skirt. The flared a-line silouhette is flattering on just about all body types and, bonus, it creates the illusion of a cinched waist while slimming legs. Olivia Palermo, Lauren Conrad, and Kristin Cavallari are just a few fashionable celebrities who have recentely been spotted in the skater skirt. They prove the versatility of the garmet, each styling and wearing their skater skirts differntly. Try a t-shirt or chambray blouse with sandals for a casual summer afternoon. Or add a tank and wedges for a night out. Go ahead and get a variety of different skate skirts, in all different colors, patterns, and fabrics (leather is really trendy right now). Check out Lulus and Tobi for a ton of fashionable and affordable options.

Long Distance Worthy?

image

It is nearing the end of March, and many of you who are in relationships probably have summer burning a hole at the back of your mind.

For some, summer is just going to be a three-month break until you get to see your significant other again. For others, summer is going to be a very long period of time with an indefinite day that you will be reunited again.

It’s a scary thing to think about. But lucky for you, there are two whole months ahead for you to decide whether your relationship is “long distance worthy” or if it’s time to say good-bye.

Many people say we’ll deal with it when the time comes, but the reality is this is an important decision that is going to take a lot of thought.

There are so many things that go into making a relationship work. So here are some important things to consider that may help when making your decision over the next few months.

1. We know it’s corny, but do you still get excited to see that person? Do you look forward to being around them? If you aren’t excited to be with that person, there is a high chance that your relationship will deteriorate over the summer and end in a bad break up.

2. Do you both compromise? There has to be give and take by both people, because the summer will be frustrating. There will be different schedules, other friends, jobs, parities; and without compromise, this summer is going to be a struggle.

3. Can you imagine yourself with that person in the future? Yes, we’re young. No one wants to think about the future. But unfortunately we’re reaching that age where you have to start realizing what you want and what’s going to make you happy in the long run.

4. Don’t make a rash decision! Think it over. Long distance relationships are scary, but sometimes that person will be worth the struggle that comes with being apart.

5. “Distance makes the heart grow fonder.” Definitely true of some relationships but it isn’t a motto to live by. If you aren’t feeling it anymore with your significant other you shouldn’t count on long distance to bring back the passion.

Make sure you let go of your insecurities when you make your decision. You’ll never go anywhere without taking risks!

Sorbet Shades and Feminine Fabrics

There are four top spring trends circulating at the moment that you can start to wear now. Since pretty blooms and horizontal and vertical lines have already been covered, let’s focus on the beauty of pastels and lace.

It may still be cold outside, but the break is upon us, so why not push the transition of our wardrobe at the same pace?

Pastels

image

From pants, tops, to accessories, a variety of materials in pastel are arriving on the scene for your enjoyment. Add a spring pop to the leftover gloom of winter and begin your transition into spring.

Choose light knit sweaters, either backless, with detailed cuts, or quarter sleeved to get a cool and comfortable look. For bottoms, go bold and add a pastel print to add some variety to your style and incorporate more of a risk. School girl skirts and fresh pastel skinny jeans are especially flattering for those of you with legs that go for miles.

Lace

The feminine fabric is big for spring and the earlier you start to look, the better chance you’ll have at finding quality options. Lace brings elegance and a bit of edge to your spring look and is perfect for the transition stage out of your winter wardrobe.

Begging to show just a tad more skin and stay sleek and sexy in your spring wardrobe?

Suit UP

Yes readers…there are only 17 days left before it is bikini season for those of us who are going on spring break at Miami!

A scary thought, I know, but to help inspire your UP Keep, here are a few suit trends to get Upsessed over.

image

From Victoria’s Secret  (above and lower right)

image

(Above left) Posted by WWD: Women’s Wear Daily

Victoria’s Secret is always a great place to look for bold suits that are almost always flattering. The only problem with their gemmed tops and sexy bottoms is that nine out of 10 times that girl lying out next to you on spring break will have the same suit.

Look for originality in your swim suits. The best place I have come to find unique suits is on none other than Pinterest. An addiction to Pinterest can introduce an entire new array of options for suit options.

image

Vtiamin A Silver ‘Sweet as Candy Bikini” found on theorchardboutique.com

Orchard Boutique is a great one to get started with. The site features a variety of designers for suits just about the same price as any VS piece and unique to its own style.

Play with your options this spring break and don’t be afraid to get bold and risky in what you choose. Look for stand out patterns and neon colors that will give you an edge compared to most others.

Don’t stray from being too loud when it comes to suits. Also be sure to switch up the style you wear and try to incorporate the one-piece trend that has been growing on the runway.

It’s all fun and games now ladies. Get shopping for the perfect, unique suit as the count down to SB 2013 continues.

Fashion Rules: Are They Real or Outdated?

By: Nicole Theodore

This whole “white is out” after Labor Day rule has been one of my pet peeves for quite some time. I have been staring blankly at my white pants, frilly white dresses, white bandeaus, white nail polish, white everything and I can’t bare to think of putting them away like yearly Christmas decorations collecting dust in an attic.

If you know me well enough, Nylon magazine is pretty much my bible to all things fashion and culture. Ray Siegel posted a great article today about this fashion rule, and I think she pretty much sums it up for all of us worrying about all the white in our closets we did not get to wear one last time. (The rule for white at a wedding still applies though, so don’t go and make that mistake and have a bride-zilla on your hands!!.)

http://www.nylonmag.com/?section=article&parid=8421

The bigger picture behind this rule is that you should always embrace your own style no matter what. Trends always come and go, so do rules like Nylon points out, but what matters at the end of the day is that you need to be happy with what you are wearing and saying to the world. Mix patterns, play with color, try out a lipstick you have been eyeing, and be bold!

Stunner Shades

By: Alex McNulty

Victoria Beckham must be too busy rehearsing for the Olympic closing ceremony to have anything else on her mind, right? Think again! This Spice Girl is continuing to build her empire with a new glasses line. Her fashion resume is quite impressive from runway to print and DVB eyewear is just her latest venture to add to the mix. Victoria can always be spotted accessorizing with the most amazing collection of vintage eyewear and in a CNN interview she remarked, “I collect vintage Gucci’s and Carrera’s - they can make virtually any outfit look cool.”

While we may loathe her for having a hot hubby, booming career, and being able to balance motherhood on top of it all, it’s hard to argue with the fashionista on that one! Her new eyewear line is said to be, “An eclectic mix of glamour-inducing oversized frames and luxuriously textured acetates resulting in a highly desirable and premium collection.”

The timeless shades are all hand crafted, assembled, and polished in the Cutler & Gross workshop located in Italy. Whether you fancy the wayfarer look, classic aviators, square frames, or cat-eye style Victoria’s Spring/Summer line showcases a variety of shapes and colors that will for sure make everyone on High Street stop and stare. Apart from the Spice Girls’ actual performance at the closing ceremony, I’m looking forward to seeing if Victoria and the other gals will don a pair of her stylish sunnies with their ensembles!

Here’s a peek at some looks from the DVB Spring/Summer ’12 line:

Accessorize From Head to Toe For Back To School

By: Danielle Antony

Now that school is coming up quicker than ever, it is the perfect time to acquire all “necessities”. Get back into the 8 AM class schedule, the chaotic days to and from meetings across campus, and find the fun in school with style.  A few great items to invest in while there are still sales (otherwise known in our world of the denial of summer’s end) on simple accessories that are must-have Upsessions for the fall season.

Book Bag

A “go-to” book bag is an easy way to pull together your look for a day of classes. I would suggest sticking with a neutral color that will essentially go with any color palette you find yourself wearing. Depending on your personal preference, you could easily get away with a trendy “pack”. For those of you who have never enjoyed anything, but one strap, find a leather tote in a color that you can rock daily!

Urban Outfitters is a great place to find the trendy “pack” I am referring to. Styles vary in color, shape, and size. These styles help keep a chic look together instead of butchering an outfit with a bulky alternative.

Leather is predicted as a popular fall trend, and a bag is the perfect way to incorporate it into your daily look. Totes just so happen to have the perfect amount of space for everyday supplies you will need for classes. They are hot and practical; definitely an investment to consider for the season. A great place to start looking is Nordstrom or any other department store. These stores will give you variety in style and price from Tory Burch (bottom left) to Badgley Mischka (bottom right).

Phone-Case

Keep up the pattern trend with a bold and fun phone case from Free People’s new collection of vintage style patterned cases. It is easy to find a trendy case, however I have recently become upsessesed with these ones in particular. They are a great, sturdy material and are unique and adorable. Choose from bold to subtle patterns and colors to add to your every day wear.

Agenda

Showcasing your organization skills in a stylish agenda is another way to incorporate your style into your school accessories. Although there are many places to search for them, I’ve found Kate Spade and  Vera Bradley  to have chic and trendy options.

Agenda by Kate Spade

There are so many ways to accessorize your every day style that is practical for a full day of classes. Have fun with your options and look put-together, even if your lack of sleep would make you feel otherwise!

The Return of DMB!

By: Alex McNulty

Fans have waited long enough (since 2009, to be exact!) for his return. While Dave Matthews’s summer tour is winding down, the musical genius has plenty else to look forward to: his eighth album, “Away From the World”, will be released on September 11th. All in all, the group has sold 32 million albums and 17 million concert tickets. To add to these fun facts is the incredible reality that the South African native himself is the tenth-best paid musician, according to Forbes, raking in $51 million (unreal)! This album is sure to be just as successful as the others given it is being recorded with the same man who produced the group’s first three studio albums, Steve Lillywhite. Super fans will have the option of purchasing a deluxe edition of the CD complete with bonus tracks, a DVD, and a 2012 tour book.

I highly advise listening to “Mercy” for a little ear candy until the remaining ten tracks drop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_86LXVvzgc. A cool way in which Dave is connecting with his fans through this video is by inviting them to take part in the creation of the video for this track. Individuals who complete at least one simplistic photo or video task may have their images featured in the fan based music video. To see how you can contribute your talents to this unique opportunity and potentially win a trip to the final show of his tour in California, go to http://mercy.davematthewsband.com.

In other super exciting Dave news, the band currently has a live series on Spotify worth checking out. It showcases their classic studio albums portrayed through live recordings, all available here: http://open.spotify.com/user/myplay.com/playlist/0sVqKpwYLfcKXJac0wJTQM

How To: Upkeep Your Outlook

Cue the bittersweet symphony; Fall is almost here.

As this heat stroke of a summer starts nearing it’s fall into the oblivion of textbooks, full-time jobs, and the new line of fashion, we need to take a moment to remember not to forget about ourselves. Keep up that summer bod, shimmery smile, and sun kissed state of mind. Summer is people’s favorite season for a reason. Yes, we all know that, but that doesn’t mean we need to feel doomed into three other seasons of depression!

This post is about how to help us make the rest of the year just as great as our past three months of summer have been! Self-outlook is the key to getting through any kind of day, week, or season. You can make this step into fall a much easier one. Here’s a few ways how!

1. Keep working out outside! With the weather still willing, it feels great to get that fresh air running through your lungs. We don’t need to trap ourselves in the rec center or city gyms just yet.

2. Wear colors. Black is always classy and a great slimmer, but don’t hop right into dark  colors as soon as the leaves start to change! Keep color in your wardrobe, and your mood will follow. This fall’s upcoming fashions are full of colors. Read UP and Upkeep that closet of yours!

3. It’s all about attitude. Sure, we may not be able to get away with wearing swim apparel out in public anymore, but we also get to do things we all look forward to about the fall! It’s not always where you are out what the weather is, but who you are going through it with. Friends. Family. Beaus. Classmates. Coworkers. Etc. We brighten one another’s lives. Spread some love & you will feel it in return.

4.Fill your free time with fun things! Make this fall just as memorable as your summer has been. Keep taking those long drives with the windows down & music up. The stars still shine just as bright at night! Find a spot and star gaze some night. The fall line up of concerts across the states is also still pretty impressive; find one to go to some weekend! Fill up your Fall.

Up your attitude. Upkeepyour life.

Upkeep Your Skin and Hair

By: Olivia Wagner

Looking for a natural remedy to boost your hairs shine, heal dry skin, and create a healthy glow?  Your answer might just be as close as in the aisles of your nearest grocery!

COCONUT OIL

Why use it?

-As a natural anti-oxidant, coconut oil works to protect the skin from free radicals that can break down tissues in the skin found responsible for signs of aging and sun damage.   Because of its unique structure, coconut oil can easily be absorbed when applied to rapidly hydrate, condition, and prevent moisture loss in the skin.  This miracle oil is also loaded with Vitamin’s E, A, B, and C that nourish and aid in the natural skin repair process, strengthen, and promote elasticity of the skin.

How to use it?

Hair

-For brittle, dull, damaged hair; simply apply a few tablespoons of oil to dry ends 30 minutes before showering to deliver the moisture your hair has been craving.

-To add shine and tame unruly fly-aways rub a touch of oil in to the palms of your hands and apply to necessary areas

-*Be careful to keep from applying to close to the scalp in order to prevent a greasy look.

-Looking for an easy and effective overnight scalp treatment?  Apply coconut oil to scalp by parting hair one section at a time until applied to the entire head.  Massage the oil into the scalp for 2-3 minutes to work the oil deeper into the hair follicle.  Run a wide toothcomb through the hair to remove any unwanted tangles and apply a shower cap to contain the oil and prevent any unwanted residue on your pillow.  In the morning, simply wash your hair as usual!  This mask can be use as frequently as wanted until desired results are obtained.

Face

-To create an exfoliating scrub that nourishes and applies vitamins while removing dead skin; combine equal parts coconut oil and baking soda and apply by gently massaging into the face in circular motions.  Finish by rinsing the skin with warm water.

Skin

-Use the oil daily to quench the thirst of stubborn excema patches and dry spots.  For a full body treatment, apply the coconut oil all over your body and allow to set for 60 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Where to find Coconut Oil?

-Any health food store like Trader Joes or Whole Foods will be guaranteed to supply it.

Price?

-Around $9.00 for 14 oz!

Next time you are the grocery store, pick up a jar and let the best kept hair and skin secret of the Polynesian people work its magic!
