A strawberry sweet summer

Let the heat wave begin! Bring on the days - when we’re not at work - that will be full of sun, fun and even sand (if we’re lucky). I love the cookouts, the parties, the whole nine yards. BUT, in order to stay bikini-ready, I have needed to do some healthy food finding.

Burgers off the barbie, as much as I love them, may not be a great idea day in and day out. On my search for fun recipes, I came upon one for a strawberry salad! Not only is it light, fresh and healthy, but it’s also just the right amount of sweet we are looking for - be it for a mid-week pick-me-up lunch at work or for a fun dish to serve at a summer cookout!

photo from ericsgourmet.com

You need:

3 cups of mixed greens

1 avocado

1/2 of a cucumber sliced

1/2 cup of strawberries sliced

1/2 cup of blueberries

1/2 cup of walnuts and/or almonds

Goat cheese (or another cheese of your preference)

Fresh lemon or juice

Olive oil

Sea salt

Directions: Add the mixed greens, sliced avocado, cucumber, strawberries and blueberries into a large bowl. Throw the nuts of your choice in, drizzle the olive oil, the lemon and a few dashes of the salt. Toss and mix it up until everything is blended together for the most part. Top with the crumbled cheese and enjoy!!

It serves two at this portion - Perfect for a fresh meal date or sharing with a roommate going to work for the day as well!

Happy UPkeep! Keep your summer sweet!

summer barbeque time!

image

Summertime, it’s finally here! With summer, comes barbeque season. They go together like high waisted jorts and american flag tankies. If you are anything like me, barbecuing is not exactly my forte. I have been my dad’s humble obeying assistant over the years. Now that we are of age though, it is time to learn some must-know BBQ tips.

Last year, nearly 18,000 people were sent to the ER because of grill injuries. Food poisoning, fire hazards, or just a little too many coronas with limes…cookouts are not to be taken too lightly. With these tips we can assure ourselves some safe FUN summer cookouts!

Tip #1: Make sure your grill is CLEAN.

Old grease from previous cookouts is a big no-go. It can cause grease flare-ups and lead to fires. Nothing says buzzkill to a summer bash like a grill fire. IF a grease fire does happen use grease to control it. Not water! Clean the cooking greates, the interior, everything.

image

Tip #2: Keep your meats separate from your other grill items.

Food poisoning is a huge concern when grilling raw meats. Just as a precaution, keep your meats and other foods like veggies separate from one another, as to not spread any bacteria. Remember to keep your meat cold until you’re ready to grill ‘em up!

image

Tip #3: Shoe FLY, Don’t bother me.

Keep those flies away! They carry over 6 million bacteria on their feet. Um, no thank you? To prevent them from getting all up in our grill, in addition to mosquitos and other pests, keep backyard candles, tiki torches, bug sprays and other bug preventers handy.

image

Tip #4: Show the excess to the exit.

After you are done grilling up your masterpieces, before you serve them up, cut off the fat. Most beef cuts have 1/4 inches of fat on the outside of the cut. You can leave it on during the grilling process, it helps the meat retain the juices better anyways, but once you are done - cut the fat!

These four tips should set you UP for a great BBQ! Remember, always upkeep those grills & your summer cookouts will always be a success. Happy grilling!

Get started early and get good grades

It is the week before finals, and what many people don’t know is that this week is just as important as the next!  While there is barely any homework due this week and classes may not be mandatory, slacking off is the worst thing that you can do.

If you take advantage of this week and correctly prepare for finals, there’s a chance that you could walk into your tests next week stress free.  So don’t procrastinate and get yourself ahead of the game for the end of the semester.

Here are some helpful tips on how to use this week wisely!

- Organize, Organize, Organize!  Make sure you know when all your finals are and have an organized schedule of where each final is and how long you’re given.  An organized schedule of when to study for each will also help you time manage all the material that you need to look over!

- Take the time to meet with your professors.  While this may be out of the way and time consuming, it will definitely help you out with understanding what material will be covered on the test and how much time to spend on each subject.

Put yourself in a good study environment.  If you know you are easily distracted try to study somewhere that will minimize that.  Try a study room at a library or a cubicle on the quietest floor.  If you are someone who needs a little buzz in the background, maybe study at a cafe.

- Don’t wait until the last minute. Procrastination will be the death of you this week.  If you leave it all to the last minute, it will be all nighters, and a case of red bull for you come Sunday night.  Try to set at least four hours aside every night so that you can get the allotted amount of studying done each day.

Eat healthy and take breaks. If you eat healthy you will feel ten times better throughout the week.  Also with the amount of time you are going to spend studying, taking breaks will help relieve the stress and give your brain some time to recuperate before moving on to the next chapter.

Happy Studying Up Readers!

The Secrets to Maintaining Healthy Vivacious Hair

image

Through the sports we play, the hot irons, the coloring, and the different hair styles, we have dragged our hair through A LOT.

Hair is a big part of what makes up our overall appearance and that is why we find so many different techniques to fix it up and torture it into the perfect position to match our outfit for the night.

It is hard to keep hair healthy, especially when a flat iron has become your best friend over the past decades.  But there are solutions to damaged and unhealthy hair!

Here are a few things that you can do to bring your hair back to life and give it the beautiful shine that can’t be found in a bottle.

- Just eating these foods will give you the nutrients and vitamins to make your hair thicker and stronger.  FOODS: Salmon, Dark Leafy Veggies, Nuts, Beans, Oysters, Eggs, and Carrots.

- Try to let your hair dry as NATURALLY as possible.  Stay away from blow dryers if it isn’t necessary.

- It may be obvious but heat devices such as curling irons, wands, and straighteners are all awful for your hair.

Try to pick and choose the days that you need straight or curled hair, because making a daily habit out of it will cause extreme damage to your locks.

image

- When washing your hair try to stay away from scorching hot water.  When conditioning your hair make sure to lather it up and let it soak in before rinsing it with warm to luke warm water.

- Stay away from brushing hair when it is wet.

- NEVER use elastic rubber bands if there is not material surrounding the outside of the band.  This will rip your hair in two.

- As much as you may love Brazilian Blowouts or perms, try to decrease your use of chemicals.  Styling your hair this way creates long term damage that is irreversible.

For everyone who wants to give their hair a little love here is a great conditioning technique that will help strengthen and smooth out rough damaged tresses.

AVOCADO Treatment

Believe it or not, when you combine avocados with mayonnaise it creates a formula that is amazing for restoring and revitalizing your hair. All you have to do is:

- Cut an avocado in half and scoop the insides into a bowl.  Then mash the avocado.

- Then add mayo and stir well so that the two are combined in a soft silky texture.

- Then spread generously into hair.

- Once the formula is spread into hair, put plastic wrap or a shower cap on to cover your hair.

- Leave the conditioner in for 20 minutes and then rinse well with cool water.

It sounds weird but you’ll be happy with the after product!

How to find the beauty in being CASUAL

image

It’s 7:30 in the morning, and you can barely get yourself out of bed let alone put on makeup and look for an outfit.  As you’re about to walk out the door, you realize the shoes you want to wear look absolutely ridiculous matched with your outfit and you have to drop everything to fix your wardrobe malfunction.

On a campus where girls look good 24/7, 365 days out of the year, there can be some pressure to dress up and look nice at all times of the day.  However, getting ready takes a lot of time, and some days you just want to roll out of bed, add a few touch ups, and head out to class in your comfy clothes.

There is NOTHING wrong with that.  In fact, there are many girls who have the “casual look” down to a science.

Over the past few years, I have had to learn how to walk the fine line between casual, and straight off-the-treadmill-messy.  There are so many ways you can dress up a comfortable, laid back outfit, and make it look presentable without having to spend hours on it.

Here are some great ideas that you can try out for those lazy days …

The hair distraction – When your outfit is looking drab and you need to look put together, there is always the hair distraction.  When you put your hair up it takes the attention from the rest of your get together.  So try a cute braid, half up-half down, or a low pony, and don’t worry about the rest.

Got straight from the rec hair?

Comfortable hats – Baseball caps, crocheted head wraps, and neutral colored beanies.

Hair bands – Keep the jungle tamed with a thick headband, or a cute plastic band to keep your loose hair back.

Easy braids or loose ponies – French braids and messy ponies are in right now on the red carpet.  Therefore they will definitely dress up a just-came-from-the-rec outfit.

The Era of Leggings – Leggings are amazing because they are the dressier version of jeans and sweatpants.  They go with absolutely everything and instantly make an outfit look more fashionable.

Yoga Pants – Yoga pants are the dressier version of sweatpants.  They are form fitting and go with all colored shoes and apparel.  They are also extremely comfortable and can be worn during any occasion.

V-Neck Tops – Instead of a regular t-shirt or baggy long-sleeve try to pair a v-neck top with a casual bottom.  This will dress up the outfit a little while being comfortable and convenient.

Colorful Sneakers – Colorful shoes can brighten up any outfit.  A cool pair of Nikes can give your OOTD the fashionable component your missing while giving your feet the support they need.

Makeup Ideas – try adding a soft layer of mascara or eye liner before you leave in the morning.  This will add a little style to your get up and take attention away from your wardrobe.

The Ever Wonderful Crew neck sweater – the crew neck sweater is comfortable, cute and goes great with every bottom whether it’s shorts, leggings, or jeans.  Bright sweaters are great for dressing up a colorless outfit.

No matter what be comfortable!  Don’t force yourself to wear outrageous get ensembles to your early morning classes, when you can dress up a casual day’s outfit!

The Dog Days are Over

The weather finally feels like spring and its time to get outside and be active! It’s been a long winter and we’ve been cooped up inside for so long, it’ll be nice to stretch your legs and get out in the sun.

Here are some great outdoor activities that will get your blood flowing and your muscles going.

Ultimate Frisbee - go out with some friends and play ultimate. It’s a great work out that’s enjoyable while leaving you winded.

Hiking - It’s still a little cook outside but that will make it feel that much better when your hiking the trails. Make sure to take a sweater to keep from catching a cold. It’ll be nice to see color returning to the terrain.

Long Runs - Enjoy the sun and head out on a long run around town. It’ll be nice to get your body some rays while enjoying fresh air.

Scenic Walks - Take your significant other or a good friend out for a walk! It can be a nice casual stroll that allows you to enjoy everything you’ve been missing out on for the past five months.

Toss a football/ throw a baseball- Opening Day was yesterday and you can celebrate the beginning of baseball season by putting on a mitt and heading outside. If baseball isn’t your thing, grab a football!

No matter what it is take advantage of this beautiful weather. Walk to your classes, eat outside, and spend every moment you can outside in the sun.

Happy Spring Up Readers!!

Stress Free By Candle Light

image

We all have those days where we feel up to our neck in responsibilities and tasks.

There’s always an extra assignment to do, your boyfriend is mad because you didn’t text him back fast enough, and your professor is making you attend mandatory 2 hour lectures, like you didn’t have enough work already.

It’s impossible to do a thorough job on your work with a cluttered and distressed mind.  So instead of doing a mediocre job, take a step back, light some candles and let your mind relax.

Homey aromas, and warm atmosphere, are what make candles the ultimate pacifier.  Here are some great candle and incense options to ease the mind and make the week a lot more enjoyable!

Long Distance Worthy?

image

It is nearing the end of March, and many of you who are in relationships probably have summer burning a hole at the back of your mind.

For some, summer is just going to be a three-month break until you get to see your significant other again. For others, summer is going to be a very long period of time with an indefinite day that you will be reunited again.

It’s a scary thing to think about. But lucky for you, there are two whole months ahead for you to decide whether your relationship is “long distance worthy” or if it’s time to say good-bye.

Many people say we’ll deal with it when the time comes, but the reality is this is an important decision that is going to take a lot of thought.

There are so many things that go into making a relationship work. So here are some important things to consider that may help when making your decision over the next few months.

1. We know it’s corny, but do you still get excited to see that person? Do you look forward to being around them? If you aren’t excited to be with that person, there is a high chance that your relationship will deteriorate over the summer and end in a bad break up.

2. Do you both compromise? There has to be give and take by both people, because the summer will be frustrating. There will be different schedules, other friends, jobs, parities; and without compromise, this summer is going to be a struggle.

3. Can you imagine yourself with that person in the future? Yes, we’re young. No one wants to think about the future. But unfortunately we’re reaching that age where you have to start realizing what you want and what’s going to make you happy in the long run.

4. Don’t make a rash decision! Think it over. Long distance relationships are scary, but sometimes that person will be worth the struggle that comes with being apart.

5. “Distance makes the heart grow fonder.” Definitely true of some relationships but it isn’t a motto to live by. If you aren’t feeling it anymore with your significant other you shouldn’t count on long distance to bring back the passion.

Make sure you let go of your insecurities when you make your decision. You’ll never go anywhere without taking risks!

Recognizing the Best of the Year

With the Academy Awards this week, I was inspired to look back on the trendiest foods from this year and spotlight one that I felt worthy of acclaim for its excellence.

In my reflection, only one item came to mind- an item that has swept the nation with its nutritional benefits, versatility, and consumer satisfaction.

And the award goes to…

GREEK YOGURT

A fast favorite for weight loss plans and healthy eating fanatics, plain greek yogurt is the hottest thing to come from Greece since Maria Menunous.

So what makes this seemingly boring item so great?

Nutrition Breakdown of 0% fat Greek Yogurt

  • According to Jenny Norgaard RD, protein takes longer to digest than carboyhrates and has been found to boost satiety

  • 7 oz. of plain Greek yogurt has only 8 g of sugar compared to the 17g per 7 oz.’s that traditional yogurt has

- low in calories

  • 1 cup of 0% fat plain greek yogurt has only 130 calories

Ouch! 10 Worst Things For Your Skin

image

www.prevention.com

Last week we did a blog edition on how to exfoliate your face for healthier and rejuvenated skin.  This week, we are going to do the opposite, and fill you in on the top 10 worst things to do for your skin. You’ll be surprised at some of the daily things you do that are eating away at your complexion!

1. Not drinking enough water - Water keeps your skin hydrated and healthy.  Dehydrated skin is thin and easily retains wrinkles.

2. Smoking - Smoking not only causes wrinkles, but it also causes the color of your skin to tinge a different color. Also, it increases your risk of skin cancer.

3. Constantly touching your face -  The oil, dirt, and bacteria from your hands will end up on your face causing acne breakouts.

4. Tanning beds - The power of the tanning beds will burn your skin and severely increase your chances of gaining sun spots, wrinkles, and skin cancer.

5. Antibacterial Soap - This soap may be good for killing bacteria, but is much too harsh on your face.  Try to only use protective cleansers when washing your face.

6. Picking popping or squeezing - Picking at pimples, moles, scabs, and insect bites (gross, but its the truth), will only lead to scarring and worsening of what is already there.  Try to break the habit of having to touch blemishes.

7. Not getting enough sleep - Your skin repairs itself while you are asleep.  This is why most skin care products are supposed to be applied at night.

8. Not getting enough exercise - Without exercise, you have more stress which wears out your complexion, and you don’t get the necessary oxygen and nutrients that you need.

9. Don’t use makeup as sun protection - You need to wear sunscreen to prevent skin damage and future wrinkles.  Makeup is not enough, and coating it on will only make your skin worse by clogging your pores.

10. Don’t overuse anti-aging products or face cleansers - You never want too much of a good thing.  Over use of cleansers and anti-aging will either dry out your face (cleanser) or clog your pores and make you acquire acne (anti-aging).  Use in moderation!

Give your skin a fighting chance and try to reduce your bad habits!

Split UP With Split Ends

image

With spring right around the corner, there is no time better for new beginnings than the present - and that includes a new beginning with your hair.

During winter it can be harder to upkeep that mop on top of your head; we understand. The thing I struggle with the most is split ends. Between frying my hair with a straightener or rushing through my post-shower routine, not treating my hair with everything it may need leaves my ends feeling less than stellar.

How can we do this, you may ask? For starters, regular haircuts! Some of us take three years to grow our hair out, so trust me, I understand your hesitation with heading to the salon. Getting regular little trims though is so crucial. According to totalbeauty.com, you need to cut one and a half inches above split ends when you go to get your hair cut. So let’s suck it up and scootch on over to the salon.

Second, aside from conditioners, there are SO many great products out there for split end treatment & prevention.

image

Option #1: Avon Advance Techniques Dry Ends Serum

It immediately makes frizzy ends and flyaways less noticeable. Avon is known for their refreshing, light-weight, and flattering products. I have no doubt this serum will be any different. AND it’s only about $5 at most drug stores like CVS, Walgreens, etc.

image

Option #2: Frizz-Ease Creme Serum Overnight Repair Formula

For those of you that are fans of overnight treatments, this is the perfect match for you! As long as you don’t use too much at once, this will leave dry or damaged hair feeling softer and more moisturized as soon as you wake up. Bye bye split ends, good morning healthy hair!

image

Option #3: Bumble and bumble Seaweed Conditioner

People always rave about Bb. products, and I have tried a few out and have been extremely satisfied with them. This conditioner is said to be fantastic for split ends and great for easily-tangled hair. Give it a try!

image

Option#4: Herbal Essence Long Term Relationship Leave-In Split-End Protector

Aside from always leaving your hair smelling INCREDIBLE, Herbal Essences has come out with this split-end protector that I have actually used before and I love it. It’s light-weight and never makes my hair feel greasy like some other products do. I trust the brand and highly recommend this leave in product if you want something to last through out your school day, work day, workout, or etc.

image

Another helpful tip:

Do not brush your hair when it’s wet, it can lead to more split ends surprisingly. Instead, brush through it before your shower. This helps prevent the tangling and breakage of hairs post-shower.

Start Spring off right and split up with those split ends. Happy UPkeep!

Exfoliating - Skin’s Best Friend

image

www.tips21.com

Everyone wants to have amazing flawless skin like the beautiful women on the Cover Girl commercials! But how do they do it? How do they get their skin to shine and glimmer, with absolutely no spots or blemishes?

Well, first off, they have a professional makeup team, and second they know how to take care of their skin. However, you can get amazing skin without a whole team of makeup artists!  One of the most important parts of skin care is exfoliation and here we will give you tips and products that will not only improve the health of your skin, but also your self confidence.

Exfoliants

image

Oh Honey amber facial scrub is great for getting rid of dead skin cells, smoothing skin, and building collagen.  It includes real honey which will feel great on your face, neck, and hands.  For more information visit, http://www.mangomadnessskincare.com/amber-face-scrub.html

Origins Ginger Body Scrub is a crowd favorite that gets the job done while smelling great and feeling refreshing.  The product starts off as a tough scrub and turns into a soft lather half way through usage, leaving skin feeling soft and reinvigorated.

image

STEPS TO GREAT EXFOLIATION

- First, make sure your hair is pulled back and secure, so it won’t be falling into your face.

- Then, take a normal wash cloth and wet it with hot water

-Place the warm wash cloth on your face for 2-3 minutes, to open your pores and ready them for exfoliation.

- Then take your normal face cleanser and wash your face.  You want to make sure you’re exfoliating beneath the top layer oil and grime.

-Then take your favorite exfoliant and scrub your face.  You can use your hands, or you can use a face scrubber that can be purchased at Origins, Sephora, or Nordstrom.

-Make sure to wash off all the exfoliant and dead skin from your face.

-Lastly, make sure after your face dries that you apply a small lather of lotion.  You don’t want your face to dry out after your deep cleanse!

Happy UPKEEPing!

To Avocado? Or Not To Avocado?

image

The controversy over the health benefits of avocados has been a long debated topic.  Let’s clarify the question,  ”to avocado” or “not to avocado?”

Why Avocados?

- Avocados help you maintain a healthy heart by giving you doses of vitamin B6 and folic acid.  It also contains Vitamin E and monounsaturated fat.

- They help lower cholesterol because they are rich in a compound called beta-sitosterol.

- Avacados contains anti-inflammatory properties because of its polyphenols and flavanoids

- They increase eye health because they are an excellent source of carotenoid lutein, which helps fight off macular degeneration and cataracts.

-Avocado oil is also included in many cosmetics because of its ability to nourish skin and make skin shine. DIY Tip: If you are battling super dry skin this winter, try scooping out an avocado, squeezing a little bit of lemon in it, and using it as a face mask for 15 minutes.

-They have anti-aging properties, fight free-radicals, cure bad breath, protect against cancer, and may also be linked with increasing nutrient absorption.

Why Not Avocados?

-Avocados are not the food to eat if you’re trying to lose weight or get that 6-pack for spring break.  Unfortunately, avocados are very high in sugars and saturated fat.

-It is known as a healthy way for people to gain weight.

Health experts have said that the benefits outweigh the negatives when it comes to avocados.  Yes, they should be eaten in proportion, but they should also be something to include in your weekly diet.  Eating avocados every other day will not be harmful because the fat content is all healthy fats.

Avocados are extremely tasty and go great with sandwiches, salads, and   taste amazing when made into GUACAMOLE!
