All Tied UP

The sweat and mess from the summer heat leaves hair frizzy and all out of sorts. A perfect disguise to this catastrophic knotty chaos is a simple hair style paired with a head scarf. It keeps that head of tangles out of your face and is a simple cure to the miserable humid air.

The bohemian hippie chick look is great by the pool or even on a busy day running errands. Try something new this summer and experiment with this popular trend. Create variations of the style by mixing up your hairstyles and rotating scarves.

Paint the rainbow

This summers nail art trend is the simplest one yet. Choosing only one of your favorite colors for summer can be difficult, so why not paint every nail a different hue? Skittling, or swatching, is a fun way to sample all of the bright, summery shades.

Instead of fussing with tiny designs, skittling is a more chic and easier form of nail art. The wild patterns can get messy; this look is neat and clean. And anyone can do it.

Who said friendship bracelets can’t grow up

Summer weather inspires a trend for friendship bracelets and necklaces. Warm temperatures and a yarning to spend time outside sparks a desire to channel our inner hippy spirit. Creating friendship bracelets is the perfect solution to a boring summer day or a long car ride.

image

Honestly WTF’s DIY section is one of my favorite sites for new activities and interesting projects. The website provides all the directions and tools you need to make these friendship bracelet-like necklaces. They are extremely easy to make and a fabulous complement to any summer outfit.

The Supplies:

  • cotton rope or twine
  • scissors
  • nuts and washers
  • embroidery thread
  • thread bobbins or squares of cardboard

image

Here are the directions from Honestly WTF DIY:

- To make a 2-tone necklace, cut a long piece of rope and wrap two different colors of embroidery thread around its own bobbin.

- Tie a starter knot along with the two colored threads you are using, leaving at least 3 inches of slack,  tape down the slack to a flat surface or safety pin it something that will help keep it in place (feeling nostalgic yet?).

- Lay the color that isn’t being used (shown here in purple) in your left hand, along with the rope, and hold them taut.

- Take the active color (shown here in red) in your right hand, pass it over the rope, loop it under and back through the opening.  Pull up and to the right to tighten.  Repeat the knots until you are ready to switch colors.

image

- To switch colors put the color you were using (red) in your left hand and the new color (purple) in your right hand. Then repeat the steps!

image

When you have completed covering the rope or twine compliment the colors by adding a few nuts or washers to the necklace. Undo the starter knot and tie both ends together to complete your project. Mix a few different necklaces together, with contrasting lengths and colors to add some flare to your summer look!

Chalk It Out This Summer

Attention all you festival lovers: get all decked out this festival season with vibrant colorful hair chalk! Hair chalking creates a dip-dyed look without the money or permanent commitment.

image

Wondering how to create this fun look?

Follow these 4 steps:

1. First, wet the pieces of hair that you want to change the color of

2. Then, grab the color chalk you want to use in one hand and a chunk of hair around 1-2 inches thick in the other hand

3. Start brushing the piece of chalk in a down-wards motion down the piece of hair

4. Continue chalking the piece of hair until the amount of color you want is visible

Blonde hair works well with pretty much any of the hair chalk hues, but reddish/peach colors compliment blonde hair the best.

Those with red hair should use light colored hair chalk. Mint green, slate blue, and yellow look the best.

Vibrant and bright shades stand out the best on brown or black hair. Pink, magenta, mint green, and turquoise are great options.

image

With Lollapalooza, Governors ball, and Bonnaroo just around, be sure to order your hair chalk from Free People or Urban Outfitters to keep up with this summer’s hottest trend!
